Electrical Stimulation

Types Of Electrical Stimulation

Electrical Nerve Stimulation (ENS)

Is mainly used for the analgesic effect & to treat abnormal muscle contraction. By doing so, it modifies impulses in the sensory pathways in order to alter pain patterns. It produces a release of endorphins which is to provide pain relief through the muscle & the ongoing changes are that it interrupts or breaks the learnt pain pathways that the body develops.

Electrical Muscular Stimulation (EMS)

Is mainly used to treat irritated muscle fibres an abnormal muscle contraction. It also aids in the increase of muscular activity with an increase in blood supply to the muscle and surrounding tissue, which creates faster healing.

Also in post-surgery recovery, EMS reduces the effects of muscular inactivity during times of immobilisation & long term rest.

It is best to use tens for as short time as possible to obtain pain relief. Some patients will use the TENS for 15 mins before they get out of bed in the morning, while other patients will need to have it in use for up to 24hours a day.

We use Electrical Muscular Stimulation to achieve:

  • Increase cellular activity in the treatment of joints, ligaments or tendons.
  • Alter pain perception
  • Produce a release of endorphins for pain relief.
  • Interrupts pain pathways.
  • Pain relief in soft tissue and musculoskeletal dysfunction and injury.
  • Provides pain relief in joint pain such as arthritis.
  • Provides pain relief in acute and chronic pain syndromes.
