Dry Needling

Dry needling

Is a tool used to reduce abnormal muscle contracture, de-activate myofascial trigger points, increase blood supply, along with nutrients and to help with decreasing pain receptors and signalling.

Using a very fine needle, the needle is inserted into the muscle. Areas of where is determined by tactile approach. We can feel where the swollen muscle fibres are, apply pressure at that location, see its response and determine if needling is the right option for it.

Dry needling is a great tool to urgently assist in the relief of myofascial pain and the treatment of myofascial pain syndromes.

Dry needling that clinical myotherapists do:

Deep Dry needling

Involves inserting the needling into the muscle, in order to deactivate and settle down the contracted muscle fibres that are causing pain, dysfunction and inflammation.

As we are deactivating we are bringing normality back into the electrical function of the neuromuscular junction, eliminating abnormal muscle fibre contracture & pain that’s associated with pain, ANS and PNS.

Superficial dry needling

Involves the superficial insertion of the fine needle into the skin directly overlying the myofascial issue/trigger point/restrictive tissue.

This is to bring about a more blood flow creating response and to help separate the tissues directly above the issue or in the area being affected.

Electroneedling

With electro needling, the needles are inserted into the area needed to have relief and an electrical current is applied to the needles.

With direct pathway into the muscle- the analgesic effect occurs & to treat abnormal muscle contraction. By doing so, it modifies impulses in the sensory pathways in order to alter pain patterns. It produces a release of endorphins which is to provide pain relief through the muscle. Ongoing changes are that it interrupts or breaks the learnt pain pathways that the body develops.
